Himachal polyandry marriage | The two brothers from Himachal Pradesh, who married the same woman under the centuries-old ‘Jodidar Pratha,’ have publicly defended their decision. ‘Jodidar Pratha’ is a traditional form of fraternal polyandry practiced by the Hatti community.
The Negi brothers, Pradeep and Kapil, tied the knot with Sunita Chauhan from Kunhat village in a three-day celebration held in Shillai’s Thindo family home in the Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur district.
Speaking in a Facebook video, Pradeep Negi said, “I don’t care that some people are abusing us on social media. The tradition has been followed for generations and will continue.” He explained that ‘Jodidar Pratha’—also known as ‘Jodidara’—is not limited to their area but is also observed in Jaunsar-Bawar, Uttarakhand, where both grooms exchange garlands with the same bride during such ceremonies.
Himachal polyandry marriage ‘a voluntary union’
Kapil Negi clarified that the marriage was entirely voluntary and accepted by both brothers, their wife, and their families. “I will keep advocating for our traditions and culture. Individuals unfamiliar with our customs are also attempting to express their opinions. All of us agreed to this marriage, and our family and society are pleased,” Pradeep added.
The brothers emphasised that their decision was rooted in preserving their heritage rather than seeking publicity. “We didn’t get married to make headlines,” Kapil said. Pradeep further stated, “The sole purpose of this marriage is to remain together and continue to love each other. We ask people not to criticise us because we have our own lives and we are content with them.”
The wedding, which began on July 12, featured local folk songs, traditional dances, and community festivities. The practice of fraternal polyandry in the Hatti clan has historically been linked to preventing the division of ancestral land in highland farming communities, with the eldest brother traditionally recognised as the legal father of children born in such marriages.
