Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on Saturday following a heart attack, as per ANI. He was 73. His death was confirmed by Apollo Hospital. Details regarding his funeral and final rites are yet to be officially announced.
Following Bhagyaraj’s demise, the Tamil Nadu government announced that he will be accorded state honours during his final journey. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay expressed grief over the filmmaker’s passing, describing him as a multifaceted personality whose contributions as a director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue writer and music composer left a lasting impact on Tamil cinema.
Film Industry Pays Tribute to the Veteran Filmmaker
Condolences poured in from across the Indian film fraternity following the news of Bhagyaraj’s death. Actors and filmmakers including Kamal Haasan, Venkatesh Daggubati, Raghava Lawrence, Selvaraghavan and Simran remembered his contribution to cinema and his influence on generations of storytellers.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also paid tribute, remembering Bhagyaraj as an exceptional writer and filmmaker whose screenplays, realistic storytelling and memorable characters earned him a unique place in Indian cinema. He extended condolences to Bhagyaraj’s family and colleagues from the film industry.
Kamal Haasan also mourned the loss, recalling his long association with Bhagyaraj and describing his passing as a significant loss for Tamil cinema.

A Journey from Assistant Director to Acclaimed Filmmaker
Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj was born in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, Bhagyaraj began his career as an assistant to renowned filmmaker Bharathiraja. He initially appeared in supporting roles in films such as 16 Vayathinile (1977) and Sigappu Rojakkal (1978) before establishing himself as a writer and filmmaker.
He contributed scripts for films including Kizhakke Pogum Rail and Tik Tik Tik, while assisting Bharathiraja on several projects. Bhagyaraj made his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979 and also emerged as a leading actor with Puthiya Vaarpugal, marking the beginning of a successful career that spanned decades.
