A dramatic scene unfolded in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad when a woman entered a jewellery shop pretending to be a customer but ended up being slapped nearly 20 times in 25 seconds by the shopkeeper after a failed robbery attempt.
The incident, which occurred on November 3 around 12:30 pm, was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral on social media.
According to police officials, the woman—her face covered with a dupatta—entered a gold and silver shop near the Ranip vegetable market in Ahmedabad. Moments later, she threw chilli powder toward the shopkeeper’s eyes, apparently to blind him and steal jewellery.
However, her plan failed as the chilli powder did not reach his eyes. Realising what had happened, the shopkeeper immediately retaliated—slapping her repeatedly and dragging her out of the store.
CCTV Footage Sparks Online Frenzy
The CCTV footage shows the shopkeeper jumping onto the counter, confronting the woman, and slapping her around 20 times within seconds. The video quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing sharp reactions from users—some praising his quick response, others shocked by the intensity of the encounter.
The clip is now among the most-shared local videos from Gujarat this week.
Police said the shopkeeper declined to file a formal complaint, but an investigation has been launched to trace the woman based on CCTV footage.
Ranip Police Station’s PI Ketan Vyas told reporters, “The shopkeeper is refusing to file a complaint, but police have begun investigating the woman based on CCTV footage.”

The Ahmedabad Police also confirmed their proactive stance in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “In this case, the complainant was personally met twice to obtain a statement and was asked to file a complaint, but the businessman is not inclined to lodge one. Nevertheless, an investigation has been initiated to search for the accused based on the CCTV footage.”
Viral Incident Raises Questions About Self-Defense and Public Safety
The video has also sparked online debate about self-defense laws and the growing number of robbery attempts across Indian cities. Authorities have advised shopkeepers to install high-resolution CCTV systems and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
