Dhudmaras, a small tribal village nestled in the Kanger Valley National Park of Bastar district, Chhattisgarh, has carved a name for itself on the global stage. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has included Dhudmaras in its list of the top 20 best tourism villages in the world, recognising it as a model for environmental conservation and sustainable development.

To boost eco-tourism, the state government has begun developing trekking trails, camping sites, and homestays. Local artisans and performers are being encouraged and connected to markets to promote traditional handicrafts. Efforts are also underway to strengthen road and transportation networks to facilitate tourist access.
The Eco-Tourism Development Committee of Dhudmaras operates adventure activities such as kayaking and bamboo rafting on the Kanger River, offering livelihood opportunities to local youth. Basic facilities for tourists, including waiting rooms and toilets, are being developed at the village level.
The Forest and Tourism Departments are working in coordination to develop Dhudmaras as a prominent eco-tourism destination. Similar eco-tourism initiatives are now being encouraged in Nagalsar and Netanar villages as well.
A Model of Community-Led Rural Development
The success of Dhudmaras showcases how government schemes, when implemented with community participation, can lead to holistic economic, social, and cultural development in rural areas. The village has now become a source of inspiration for the entire Bastar region.
