Netflix’s latest sensation, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” directed by renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is turning heads with its opulence and star-studded cast.

The series, set in pre-independent India, showcases a world of courtesans portrayed by leading ladies such as Sonakshi Sinha, Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari and newcomer Sharmin Segal.

The show has spared no expense, with a reported budget of approximately Rs 200 crore, making it a grand spectacle on screen. Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself commanded a significant portion of the budget, reportedly charging between Rs 60-70 crore for his directorial efforts.

Among the Heramandi cast, Sonakshi Sinha took on the role of Fareedan and received Rs 2 crore for her performance. Manisha Koirala and Richa Chadha, portraying Mallikajaan and Lajjo respectively, were paid Rs 1 crore each.

Aditi Rao Hydari’s portrayal of Bibbojaan earned her between Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 crore. Sanjeeda Shaikh, playing Waheeda, Mallikajaan’s sister, received Rs 40 lakh. Sharmin Segal, Bhansali’s niece, was compensated with over Rs 30 lakh for her role as Alamzeb.

A comeback

Fardeen Khan, making a comeback with “Heeramandi,” was reportedly paid Rs 75 lakh for his character Wali Mohammad, which has garnered him praise from audiences and critics alike.

At a special premiere in Los Angeles, Sanjay Leela Bhansali revealed that the project initially began as a film featuring iconic actresses Rekha, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji.

However, over the years, casting choices evolved, leading to the current ensemble cast. Bhansali also mentioned considering Pakistani actors such as Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, and Imran Abbas for the series.

Apart from the leading stars, the series also features Adhyayan Suman, Jason Shah, Taha Shah Badussha, and Shekhar Suman in supporting roles, adding depth to the narrative.

“Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” promises viewers a lavish and captivating journey into a bygone era, with its intricate storytelling and stellar performances. With Bhansali’s masterful direction and the cast’s impressive talent, the series is set to leave a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
