Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s latest Netflix series, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” has been grabbing attention since its release. While many admire its stunning visuals, some are criticizing it for not sticking to historical facts. In a recent chat, Sonakshi Sinha, who plays a key role in the show, pushed back against those who fault it for historical inaccuracies, saying the creators never promised a history lesson and that it’s fictional.
Sonakshi Sinha explained in an interview that while the show takes inspiration from the real Hira Mandi in Lahore, it’s not meant to be an exact portrayal of history.
She stressed that “Heeramandi” is a world imagined by Bhansali. Sonakshi defended the filmmaker’s style, saying he’s known for his visuals and artistic flair, which is what he delivers in “Heeramandi.” She said, “He’s offering you a dream and a vision, and that’s his trademark.”
Sonakshi Sinha also called out the double standards of critics who praise Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” which also takes liberties with history, while slamming “Heeramandi.”
She argued that both shows should be judged equally and appreciated for their entertainment value.
Despite the backlash, “Heeramandi” has been a hit with viewers. The series debuted at number two on Netflix’s weekly top 10 list for non-English language shows, outperforming many recent international titles.
It attracted 4.5 million views, with a total of 33 million viewing hours.
Sonakshi’s defense of “Heeramandi” sheds light on the ongoing debate over historical accuracy in entertainment. While some expect accuracy, others prioritize entertainment and artistic freedom. As the discussion continues, “Heeramandi” remains a captivating watch for many, showcasing Bhansali’s signature style and storytelling prowess.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his visual style, has often blurred the lines between reality and fantasy in his films. “Heeramandi” is no exception, as it immerses viewers in a world inspired by the historical Hira Mandi while weaving its own fictionalized storylines.
