In a Reddit post, a woman known as OrigamiTorbie has expressed her frustration over her millionaire husband charging her rent to live in their shared home. Despite being married for six years and living together for a total of 18 years, the woman claims she does not experience the benefits typically associated with being married to a millionaire.
According to her post, the woman’s husband, who retired at 50 after inheriting a significant fortune from his mother four years ago, insists she pays rent and covers her own bills, even for minor expenses.

The woman shared that she has modest savings of around $250,000, primarily tied up in a 401k, and therefore cannot afford to retire anytime soon. In contrast, her husband enjoys an affluent lifestyle, engaging in expensive hobbies such as golf and sailing, and frequently takes lavish trips without her.
Reflecting on their early relationship, the woman recounted that her husband, then earning a modest salary of about $40,000, had insisted on splitting all expenses equally.
This arrangement was a result of his negative experiences with previous partners who he felt wanted financial support from him. They maintained separate bank accounts and even shopped for groceries individually.
However, their lives changed dramatically after the husband’s mother passed away, revealing her small business was worth more than expected. Each sibling inherited $8 million.
Following this windfall, the husband purchased an expensive new home, and the woman assumed she would no longer need to pay rent. To her surprise, her husband increased her rent to $1,800, citing higher utilities and property taxes.
Working from home during the pandemic, the woman said on Reddit that she observed her husband’s indulgent lifestyle firsthand. She described his leisurely routine, which included waking up late, playing golf, enjoying elaborate lunches and planning extravagant trips with wealthy friends.

Despite her dissatisfaction, the woman hesitates to confront her husband about her feelings, fearing it might appear she is after his money. She lamented the loss of their former happiness and expressed sadness over his lack of willingness to share his good fortune.
Reddit users reacted with shock and dismay to her story. One user suggested she stop paying rent, questioning her husband’s love and commitment. Another pointed out the oddity of her husband acting more like a landlord than a partner. Some commenters advised her to leave him, while others recommended marriage counseling to clarify the nature of their relationship.
Ultimately, the woman’s post sparked a significant conversation about the dynamics of financial sharing and partnership in a marriage, with many criticizing her husband’s approach and urging her to seek a more equitable and supportive relationship.
