Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has raised alarms over the deteriorating US-India relationship, warning that President Donald Trump’s escalating tariffs on Indian imports could jeopardize a critical partnership needed to counter China’s influence in Asia.
In a compelling opinion piece for Newsweek, co-authored with Hudson Institute fellow Bill Drexel, Haley described the current state of bilateral ties as a “troubling inflexion point” and called for urgent diplomatic efforts to prevent a “strategic disaster.”
With a new 25% tariff on Indian goods set to take effect on August 27, adding to an existing 25% levy, Haley’s plea underscores the need for both nations to prioritize their shared goals over trade disputes.
Here are five key takeaways from her stance on the issue.
1) Tariff Tensions Risk Derailing US-India Relations
Haley sharply criticized the Trump administration’s decision to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 27, following an earlier 25% tariff signed on July 31. This move, prompted by India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, brings the total duty to 50%. While acknowledging the concern over India’s oil imports, Haley stated, “Trump is right to target India’s massive Russian oil purchases,” but cautioned that treating India as an adversary is “a massive—and preventable—mistake.” She urged the US to avoid escalating trade spats that could fracture a vital alliance.

2) India Must Not Be Equated with China
A central theme of Haley’s argument is the distinction between India and China. She emphasized, “India must be treated like the prized free and democratic partner that it is—not an adversary like China,” pointing out that China, a major buyer of Russian oil, has faced no similar sanctions.
Haley argued that penalizing India while giving China a pass undermines America’s strategic interests and risks alienating a key democratic ally in the Indo-Pacific region.
3) India’s Strategic Role in Countering China’s Dominance
Haley highlighted India’s unique position as a counterweight to China, warning that “scuttling 25 years of momentum with the only country that can serve as a counterweight to Chinese dominance in Asia would be a strategic disaster.”
She stressed India’s potential to reshape global supply chains, noting, “India stands alone in its potential to manufacture at China-like scale for products that can’t be quickly or efficiently produced here, like textiles, inexpensive phones, and solar panels.” This makes India indispensable for US efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing.
4) Strengthening Defense and Security Ties with India
Beyond trade, Haley underscored India’s growing role in global security, describing it as “a crucial asset to the free world’s security” due to its expanding defense cooperation with the US and allied nations.
She emphasized that India’s strategic alignment with the US strengthens the free world’s ability to address global challenges, particularly in countering authoritarian regimes like China. This partnership, she argued, deserves the same high-level attention as US relations with China or Israel.
5) Urgent Call for Dialogue Between Trump and Modi
To prevent further strain, Haley called for immediate diplomatic engagement, urging Trump to “reverse the downward spiral” through direct talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The sooner the better,” she wrote, advocating for increased resources and attention to mend the rift. She also advised India to take Trump’s concerns about Russian oil seriously and work collaboratively with the White House to find solutions, reinforcing the need for both nations to prioritize their shared strategic goals.
