Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections.
The polls mark the first general election in nearly two years following the fall of the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina.

In a post on X, PM Modi confirmed the conversation and congratulated Rahman on the BNP’s electoral success.
“Delighted to speak with Mr Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections. I conveyed my best wishes and support in his endeavour to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh. As two close neighbours with deep-rooted historical and cultural ties, I reaffirmed India’s continued commitment to the peace, progress, and prosperity of both our peoples.”
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister had also extended his “warm congratulations” in a separate post.
“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading the BNP to a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership.”
He added: “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reposted the Prime Minister’s message on X.
BNP Crosses Majority Mark
Media tallies indicated that the BNP crossed the crucial 151-seat threshold required to form the government. However, the Election Commission is yet to formally announce the final results.
In a statement on X, the BNP’s media cell said the party was set to form the next government after securing a majority of seats.

The election was held to replace the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, which assumed office 18 months ago after the collapse of the Awami League regime in August 2024. The Awami League was subsequently disbanded.
Straight Contest Amid Political Transition
The 13th parliamentary elections were widely viewed as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally, Jamaat-e-Islami.
The vote was conducted alongside a referendum on implementing an 84-point reform programme known as the July National Charter.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following the political upheaval, remains in exile.
Tarique Rahman’s Political Comeback
If the BNP formally forms the government, Tarique Rahman would become Bangladesh’s first male prime minister in 36 years.
Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December after spending more than 17 years in self-exile. Following the election outcome, he urged party workers to avoid victory rallies and instead organise special prayers across the country.
