Coke studio Bangla has come back with a banger in their new season. Keeping in mind the Bengali new year and the cultural richness of Bengal, Coke Studio Bangla presents a song which delves deeper into the lives of the artisans who weave fabrics whispering the traditional opulent culture. In Bengali they are known as “Tati”, which is also the name of this song.
The origin of the weaving industry is almost more than 500 years old. The struggle of the weaving industry over the years, starting from the British rule, when the Raj imposed restrictions on the creations to promote clothes in India manufactured in Manchester is unknown to many people.
The weaving industry also played an important role in maintaining solidarity and unity between the people of both East and West Bengal during the Partition of Bengal in 1905. The weavers used to weave the lyrics of various songs into the sarees they made, the songs which united people to revolt against the Partition of Bengal.
‘Tati’ starts with the sound of weaving machines in the background and artisans busy doing their job. The lyrics narrates a story of a village bride walking to the riverside, clad in her beautiful red saree, wearing an armlet and anklet in her ankles and describes how she is beautifully dressed-up with the pallu wrapped around her waist.
