A fierce encounter broke out between security forces and Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Saturday (March 29), resulting in the killing of at least 16 Naxals, according to Bastar Inspector General Sundarraj P. The operation is still underway as security personnel continue combing the area.
Joint Operation in Kerlapal Forest
The gunfight occurred in a dense forest under the Kerlapal police station area, where a joint team of security forces, including the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), launched an anti-Naxalite operation on Friday night (March 28). The mission was initiated based on intelligence inputs about Maoist presence in the region.
“Bodies of 16 Naxalites have been recovered from the encounter site so far. The operation is still ongoing,” an official stated. Two security personnel sustained minor injuries during the clash and are receiving medical attention.
Sustained Gunbattle Since Early Morning
Officials confirmed that intermittent firing has continued since the early hours of March 29 as security forces engage with the remaining Maoist insurgents in the area. Authorities are conducting an intensive search operation in the forested terrain surrounding the encounter site to ensure the complete neutralization of threats.
A senior police official stated, “Security forces are continuing their search and combing operations in the region. A detailed statement will be released after the completion of the ongoing operation.”
