The Bollywood box office witnessed an intense showdown between two major sequels, Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2, both released on August 1, 2025. Despite mixed reviews, Ajay Devgn’s comedy-drama Son of Sardaar 2 surged ahead, outpacing Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri’s socially relevant Dhadak 2, which earned praise but struggled to draw crowds. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Son of Sardaar 2 raked in Rs 24.75 crore over its opening weekend, nearly doubling the Rs 11.4 crore collected by Dhadak 2. However, both films faced stiff competition from the romantic drama Saiyaara, which continues its blockbuster run.
Son of Sardaar 2 Rides High on Comedy Appeal
Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and produced by Ajay Devgn’s Devgn Films and Jio Studios, Son of Sardaar 2 is a sequel to the 2012 action-comedy hit. The film follows Jassi (Ajay Devgn), who journeys to Scotland to mend his marriage but gets caught in a whirlwind of mob conflicts and a chaotic Sikh wedding. With a star-studded cast including Mrunal Thakur as Rabia, Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Neeru Bajwa, Chunky Panday, Vindu Dara Singh, and Kubbra Sait, the film blends humor with cultural flair.

It opened with Rs 7.25 crore on day one, grew by 13.79% to Rs 8.25 crore on day two, and closed the weekend with Rs 9.25 crore on day three, totaling Rs 24.75 crore. Despite mixed reviews, its family-friendly appeal has given it a clear edge.
Dhadak 2 Struggles Despite Critical Acclaim
Dhadak 2, a standalone sequel to the 2018 film, directed by Shazia Iqbal and backed by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios, takes a different path by adapting the acclaimed Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal. Starring Siddhant Chaturvedi as Neelesh, a Dalit law student, and Triptii Dimri as Vidhi, an upper-caste classmate, the film tackles caste discrimination with emotional depth. Supported by actors like Saad Bilgrami, Zakir Hussain, and Saurabh Sachdeva, it earned positive reviews but failed to convert critical praise into box office success. It collected Rs 3.5 crore on day one, Rs 3.75 crore on day two, and Rs 4.15 crore on day three, ending the weekend at Rs 11.4 crore. The film’s slower pace and limited screen availability amid competition hindered its performance.
Both films faced a formidable challenge from Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, which collected Rs 8 crore on its 17th day, pushing its total to nearly Rs 300 crore after a first-weekend haul of Rs 83.25 crore. As the box office battle continues, Son of Sardaar 2 holds a strong lead, but Saiyaara remains the dominant force.
