In a major political shift in Bihar, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is set to become the next Chief Minister, marking the end of Nitish Kumar’s over 20-year-long tenure in the top post. The transition is expected to be formalised with Choudhary’s swearing-in ceremony on April 15 at Lok Bhawan as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

This development will also mark a historic moment for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the party prepares to install its first-ever Chief Minister in Bihar. Choudhary, a prominent OBC face and former state BJP president, has emerged as a consensus candidate within the party ranks.
The leadership change gathered pace after Nitish Kumar decided to shift focus to national politics by contesting for the Rajya Sabha. His decision effectively paved the way for a new leadership structure in Bihar, with BJP leaders quickly rallying behind Samrat Choudhary.
At a crucial BJP Legislature Party meeting, senior leaders including Vijay Sinha, Mangal Pandey, Dilip Jaiswal, and Renu Devi formally proposed Choudhary’s name. The proposal received the backing of central observer and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, solidifying the decision.
Samrat Choudhary Reacts: ‘A Sacred Opportunity to Serve’
Following the announcement, Samrat Choudhary expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership and described the opportunity as a responsibility rooted in public trust.
In a message posted on X, Choudhary said the role was “not merely a position” but a “sacred opportunity” to serve the people of Bihar. He pledged to meet expectations with dedication, commitment, and integrity, emphasizing his focus on development and governance.

He further highlighted that he would work under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party guidance to accelerate Bihar’s growth and prosperity.
A New Political Chapter for Bihar
Choudhary’s elevation signals a generational and political shift in Bihar’s leadership landscape. As an influential OBC leader with strong organisational experience, his appointment is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the BJP’s electoral strategy ahead of upcoming state and national elections.
The end of Nitish Kumar’s long tenure closes a significant chapter in Bihar politics, while opening the door to a BJP-led governance model in the state for the first time.
