In a major pre-poll development, renowned folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday in Patna. Her induction has created a political buzz in the Darbhanga region, with strong speculation that she may be fielded from the Alinagar seat.
Maithili’s entry comes just weeks before Bihar votes in a high-stakes two-phase Assembly election, adding cultural and emotional heft to BJP’s campaign narrative.
“Maithili Thakur ji’s return to Bihar shows her faith in the state’s development journey,” BJP election in-charge Vinod Tawde said.
Alinagar Seat Likely in Focus
Party insiders suggest that the Alinagar constituency, currently held by BJP MLA Mishrilal Yadav, could be offered to Thakur. According to sources, Yadav’s ticket is likely to be dropped, making way for the young cultural icon.
This strategic move is seen as an attempt by BJP to strengthen its regional identity politics and connect emotionally with Maithil-speaking voters across north Bihar.
BJP’s High-Profile Welcome
Thakur joined the party in the presence of BJP Bihar chief Dilip Jaiswal. Her induction is being viewed as one of the most high-profile entries into the state unit this election season.
Just last week, she had met BJP leaders including Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai in New Delhi. The meeting had already fuelled speculation about her political plunge.

“The family that left Bihar when Lalu Raj came to power in 1995 — the daughter of that family, the renowned singer Maithili Thakur ji, wants to return to Bihar,” Tawde wrote on X, posting photos of their meeting.
He added that her decision “reflects her faith in the pace of changing Bihar.”
Maithili Thakur Responds
The 23-year-old singer, who has a massive fan following on YouTube and Instagram, responded warmly to the BJP leader’s message.
“The people who dream big for Bihar, every conversation with them reminds me of the power of vision and service. Honoured and grateful from the heart,” Thakur wrote on X.
Her post has since gone viral, with BJP workers sharing it widely across north Bihar.
Bihar will vote in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting scheduled for November 14. The BJP, which is eyeing a strong performance, is expected to release its first list of candidates soon.
Thakur’s name, according to sources, is “very likely” to figure in the final list for Alinagar.
