A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal suffered a crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD president Lalu Prasad, announced that she was “quitting politics” and cutting ties with her family.
Acharya, a doctor who later chose homemaking and lives with her Singapore-based husband, posted a cryptic message on X declaring her decision. In her post, she wrote: “I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do… and I am taking all the blame.”
Sanjay Yadav is an RJD Rajya Sabha MP and a close aide of Tejashwi Yadav. Rameez is known to be Tejashwi’s friend from a political family in Uttar Pradesh.
However, Rohini’s post did not clarify why she named them or what they told her. Neither of the two were available for comments.
Political Backdrop: RJD Collapses From 75 to 24 Seats
The RJD saw its seat count plunge from 75 to 24, as the ruling NDA decimated the Mahagathbandhan and retained power in Bihar.
The NDA—powered by the BJP and JDU—achieved a massive win, crossing the 200-seat mark, with both parties registering around an 85% strike rate in the 101 seats they each contested. The BJP emerged as the single largest party.

Rohini Acharya gained widespread attention earlier when she donated a kidney to her father, Lalu Prasad. She contested the Saran Lok Sabha seat last year but lost.
There had been speculation that she was “unhappy” about the expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav from the party. Yet, during the recent Assembly elections, she was seen campaigning actively for Tejashwi Yadav.
Her sudden announcement has added new layers to the turmoil inside the RJD following its electoral collapse.
The NDA’s sweeping victory has been attributed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s enduring appeal, delivering a major blow to the Congress–RJD alliance.
