In a significant move aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and transparency, the Jharkhand government has announced the rollout of free Wi-Fi services in all government hospitals across the state. Under this new initiative, patients and their attendants visiting hospitals will have access to free internet, enabling them to browse health-related information, learn about government schemes, and use other essential digital services.
According to Ajay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, the Wi-Fi services will be provided by BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited). This initiative is a part of the state’s broader mission to advance digital healthcare infrastructure and ensure that patients are empowered with the right information during their hospital visits.
Statewide Rollout Planned Within Six Months
Ajay Kumar confirmed that the free Wi-Fi facility will become operational in all district hospitals within one month. Further, within six months, all Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) will also be equipped with this service.

“This is a revolutionary step towards providing patients with a digital support system. It will allow them to connect with health portals, key websites, and government schemes while sitting in the hospital premises,” he said.
Enhancing Transparency and Service Quality in Healthcare
The government believes that the availability of internet in hospitals will not only help patients stay informed but also improve transparency and the overall quality of services in the healthcare system. By offering seamless access to crucial information, the initiative aims to empower citizens and foster better healthcare outcomes.
This step reflects the state’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to information, even in rural and remote areas, through government-run health facilities.
