Indian Railways has announced a significant change to its advance train ticket reservation system, effective from November 1, 2024. Passengers will now be able to book train tickets 60 days in advance, a reduction from the previous window of 120 days. This update aims to provide more flexibility and convenience for travelers by allowing them to plan their trips closer to the departure date.
Key Changes in Advance Booking
New Booking Window: From November 1, 2024, passengers can reserve tickets up to 60 days before their journey instead of 120 days. This will help travelers plan their trips with more flexibility and precision.
Effective Date: The new reservation policy will come into effect on November 1, 2024. Travelers booking tickets after this date should note the shorter booking window.
Existing Bookings: Tickets already booked before November 1 will not be affected by this policy. The new rules apply only to reservations made after the policy change.
AI-Driven Seat Allocation and Enhanced Services
Indian Railways is also introducing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve passengers’ overall experience. The AI system will optimize seat allocation, increasing the likelihood of passengers receiving confirmed tickets. Reports show that AI integration has already boosted the confirmation rate by 30%.
AI is also being employed for other services
Food and Linen Monitoring: AI-enabled cameras will monitor the quality of food and linens, ensuring better service standards for passengers.
Safety Enhancements: The number of train accidents has significantly decreased, with an annual drop from 171 (2004-2014) to 68 (2014-2024). This improvement is due to enhanced safety measures implemented over the last decade.
Infrastructure Investments: The Indian government allocated ₹2,62,200 crores in the Union Budget 2024-25 to invest in new railway corridors and industrial clusters, reflecting a record boost in infrastructure development.
Electrification: Indian Railways has electrified over 41,655 Route Kilometers (RKMs) in the last decade, nearly doubling the figure before 2014 (21,413 RKMs). This effort is part of ongoing modernization and efficiency improvements.
Impact of New Reservation Policy
The new 60-day advance booking window, along with AI-based optimizations and service enhancements, underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to modernizing its operations. These changes are designed to make train travel more convenient, efficient, and comfortable for all passengers.
