In a story that blends determination, sacrifice, and raw talent, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 13-year-old cricket prodigy from Bihar, etched his name in history as the youngest player to be picked in the IPL auction. During the second day of the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah, Rajasthan Royals secured the young sensation for an impressive Rs 1.10 crore.
A Father’s Sacrifice Behind the Success
Vaibhav’s father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, sold his farmland in Motipur village, Bihar, to support his son’s cricketing journey. “Woh ab sirf humra bituwa nahi pura Bihar ka bituwa hai (He is not just my son now but entire Bihar’s son),” an emotional Sanjiv told the media. Despite facing financial hardships, Sanjiv ensured Vaibhav received the best training possible.
“My son has worked hard. At the age of 8 years, he excelled at U-16 district trials,” Sanjiv said, recalling the countless trips between their village and Samastipur for coaching sessions.
Cricket, as Sanjiv noted, is a demanding sport, both in terms of time and money. “Not just investment, it’s a big investment. Aapko kya bataye humne toh apna zameen tak bech diya (I even sold my land),” he said, highlighting the sacrifices made to nurture Vaibhav’s talent.
Bidding War and Triumph
Vaibhav’s base price in the IPL auction was Rs 30 lakh. The Delhi Capitals initiated the bidding, but it was Rajasthan Royals who triumphed, securing the young star for Rs 1.10 crore. Vaibhav impressed RR during trials in Nagpur, where he demonstrated his mettle by hitting three sixes in a match scenario and smashing eight sixes and four fours overall.

Questions regarding Vaibhav’s age — some alleging he is 15 — were swiftly addressed by his father. “When he was 8 and a half years old, he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played for India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo an age test,” Sanjiv asserted confidently.
Support from the Bihar Cricket Association
Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) president Rakesh Tiwary praised Vaibhav’s achievement, emphasizing its significance for the state. “Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s incredible achievement at such a young age fills us with immense pride,” Tiwary said, crediting Vaibhav’s success to his hard work and determination.
“The Bihar Cricket Association has always believed in nurturing young talent. Vaibhav’s success highlights the cricketing potential in our state,” he added, expressing confidence in the young player’s bright future.
A Star in the Making
While Vaibhav remains focused on his game, his father ensures he stays grounded. “He just wants to play cricket and nothing else,” Sanjiv shared. A few years ago, Vaibhav was engrossed in cartoons like Doremon. Today, he is laser-focused on the game he loves.
As Vaibhav continues his journey, his story of perseverance and passion will undoubtedly inspire countless aspiring cricketers from Bihar and beyond.
