A chaotic scene unfolded on Friday afternoon in Meerut’s Shatabdi Nagar when a stampede-like situation broke out during a Shivmahapuran event led by preacher Pradeep Mishra. With approximately 2.5 lakh devotees in attendance, the incident highlighted the challenges of managing large gatherings.
The turmoil began near the entry gates when a crowd surge caused several women to fall. Officials quickly intervened to provide first aid to those who sustained minor injuries. Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada confirmed, “No casualties were reported,” adding that security forces had been adequately deployed to maintain order.
Meerut District Magistrate Deepak Meena addressed the situation, stating, “All necessary arrangements for the programme were provided as required. The arrangements and security deployment were planned in advance after an inspection of the venue by the superintendent of police and me.” Meena also denied claims of individuals being trapped and assured the public that the situation was under control.

Surge in Devotees Strains Arrangements
The Shivmahapuran event, now in its sixth day, has seen an exponential increase in attendees eager to hear Pradeep Mishra’s recitations of the ‘Shiv Katha.’ Local media reported that the pandal was filled beyond capacity, forcing many devotees to gather outside. This surge reportedly stretched logistical arrangements to their limits.
While the incident did not result in fatalities, the stampede-like situation has raised concerns about the adequacy of planning and crowd control measures for such large-scale events. Authorities have since been reviewing the arrangements to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Comparisons to Recent Stampedes
This incident comes on the heels of another tragic stampede during a Pushpa 2 screening in Telangana’s Sandhya Theatre earlier this month. That event claimed the life of a woman and critically injured her son. Telugu superstar Allu Arjun, present at the event, was briefly detained before securing interim bail. Three others, including the theatre’s senior manager, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
As mass gatherings become increasingly common across India, the importance of robust crowd management and safety measures cannot be overstated. The Meerut event serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks and the need for meticulous planning to ensure public safety.
