Authorities in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly division suspended internet services for 48 hours from Thursday afternoon till 3 pm on Saturday, citing communal tensions over the ‘I love Muhammad’ poster row and the large gatherings expected during Dussehra and Durga Puja celebrations this weekend.
The district administration stated in its order that “there is a possibility of social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp… being misused to spread rumours and incite communal tension.” The suspension, it said, was a preventive step to maintain peace.
Security Tightened Across Bareilly and Nearby Districts
Security has been ramped up in Bareilly, with local police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed to sensitive areas. Drones are also being used for surveillance, particularly at Ramlila and Ravan Dahan grounds which attract large crowds.
Alerts were issued in Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Budaun districts by Divisional Commissioner Bhupendra Chaudhary to prevent spillover unrest.

The internet shutdown follows violent clashes last week when around 2,000 people gathered outside a mosque in Kotwali area after Friday prayers. The protest, linked to cleric Tauqeer Khan and the poster controversy, saw stone-pelting and confrontations with police.
Arrests and FIRs in Connection With Violence
So far, 81 people have been arrested, with some of their properties demolished. Two men were arrested after an encounter in Bareilly’s CB Ganj area on Wednesday; both sustained bullet injuries and are currently in custody under medical care.
Cleric Tauqeer Raza Khan, his associates, and at least one relative are among those behind bars. Police have registered 10 FIRs against 180 named and 2,500 unnamed individuals, escalating the crackdown on rioters.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has warned of strict action against those involved in violence and instructed authorities to maintain order during the festival period.
