Seattle Police Officer Kevin Dave, who struck and killed 23-year-old Indian graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula with his patrol vehicle in January 2023, has been terminated from the force, according to an announcement by the Seattle Police Department on Tuesday.
The accident occurred while Dave was responding to a potential overdose case, driving at a speed of 119 km/h. Kandula, who was crossing the street, was thrown nearly 100 feet upon impact. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. Kandula was a Master’s student at the University of Memphis and hailed from Andhra Pradesh, India.
Police Department’s Statement on the Incident
Seattle Interim Police Chief Sue Rahr commented on the tragic incident in an official statement. She emphasized that while the officer did not intend harm, the consequences of his dangerous driving could not be ignored.
“I believe the officer did not intend to hurt anyone that night and that he was trying to get to a possible overdose victim as quickly as possible. However, I cannot accept the tragic consequences of his dangerous driving. His positive intent does not mitigate the poor decision that caused the loss of a human life and brought discredit to the Seattle Police Department.”
Outrage Following Kandula’s Death
Kandula’s death sparked widespread outrage, both in the United States and India. Public anger escalated further after the release of a video in which another Seattle Police officer was heard laughing about the incident, dismissively suggesting that Kandula’s life had “limited value.” The insensitive remarks intensified calls for accountability and justice.
India conducted a thorough investigation into the matter and demanded transparency and fairness in the proceedings.
