In a surprising turn of events, the re-release of the 2018 mythological horror film Tumbbad has surpassed this week’s new release, The Buckingham Murders, at the box office. Starring Sohum Shah, the film amassed an impressive Rs 1.65 crore on its opening day, according to the filmmakers.
Tumbbad has outperformed its original release by nearly three times; it initially earned Rs 65 lakh on its opening day in 2018. The re-release’s earnings also eclipsed the opening day collections of Kareena Kapoor’s murder mystery The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta, which brought in Rs 1.15 crore domestically and reached a global gross of Rs 1.4 crore.

Not only did Tumbbad outshine new releases, but it also outperformed other recent re-releases. Comparatively, Laila Majnu earned Rs 30 lakh, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein grossed Rs 1.2 crore over three days, and Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar gathered Rs 1.2 crore in two weeks.
With this momentum, Tumbbad is on track to become the highest-grossing re-release film in recent times, especially since most re-released films conclude their box office runs with under Rs 10 crore in earnings.
Upcoming Releases and the Sequel Announcement
With a dearth of major new releases at the box office, Tumbbad is set to have an uninterrupted run, potentially adding significantly to its re-release earnings.
