In a rare and shocking incident reported from Bihar’s Bettiah district, a one-year-old boy named Govinda bit a two-foot-long cobra, mistakenly assuming it to be a toy. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon while the child was playing at his home in West Champaran.
The bite proved fatal for the snake, which reportedly died instantly, while the toddler fell unconscious and was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment. The child was first admitted to Majhauliya PHC, after which he was referred to Bettiah Government Medical College and Hospital.
Child Out of Danger, Cobra Dies After Being Bitten
According to Dr Devikant Mishra, Deputy Superintendent of JMCH Hospital, the child is out of danger and has not shown any symptoms of venom infection so far. He continues to undergo observation and treatment.
Govinda’s grandmother told local media that the cobra had entered the house when the toddler picked it up and bit it, unknowingly ripping the snake into two halves. Locals said the snake’s proximity may have agitated the child, triggering the reflexive bite.

Wildlife experts have pointed to heavy rainfall and unplanned urban construction as key reasons behind the increasing movement of snakes into human settlements. Similar incidents have been reported recently, including the tragic case of two sisters in Ludhiana’s Pawat village who died of snakebites while sleeping.
Authorities have noted a surge in snake sightings during the monsoon season, with 85 snakes rescued in Gurugram alone in July, underscoring the increased risk during this period.
