The much-anticipated sequel, Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee, hit theatres on Independence Day and it’s already making waves. Preview shows for the horror-comedy began on Wednesday, with early audiences hailing the film as a “full entertainment ride.”
The box office performance of Stree 2 is off to a flying start, breaking records as the day progresses. Industry insiders predict that the film will become the biggest box office opener of the year. Reports suggest that Stree 2 might earn over Rs 40 crore on its opening day. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film had already grossed over Rs 28 crore by 4 PM on Independence Day, with numbers expected to rise further as evening and night shows draw in more audiences.

The film’s release coincides with an extended holiday weekend, which includes Raksha Bandhan on Monday, providing it with a significant advantage. The strong start suggests that Stree 2 might easily cross the Rs 100 crore mark within the first few days.
Stree 2 continues the story from where the first part left off. The 2018 film, directed by Amar Kaushik, was set in the fictional town of Chanderi, where a malevolent spirit abducts men. To ward her off, people scribble on their walls ‘O Stree Kal Aana. (Stree, come tomorrow)”.
The sequel expands on this lore, with the townspeople now teaming up with the mysterious character played by Shraddha Kapoor to confront another ghost, known as ‘Sarkata.’ Familiar faces return to the screen, including Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee, with Pankaj Tripathi’s character Rudra joining the fray.
Stree 2 is released in competition with John Abraham’s Vedaa and Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, though neither of these films has generated significant pre-release buzz. The sequel is banking on the audience’s loyalty and affection for the original to secure its place as the year’s biggest hit. If the current trend continues, the movie could become the highest-grossing film of 2024 in no time.
