Renowned actress Radhika Apte, who announced her pregnancy in October 2024, recently shared her disheartening experience with insensitivity in the Indian film industry.
Speaking candidly about the challenges she faced during her first trimester, Apte highlighted a stark contrast between the support she received abroad and the cold response from a Bollywood producer, shedding light on the need for greater compassion in the industry.
Bollywood’s Cold Response to Pregnancy News
During a live session with Neha Dhupia’s Freedom to Feed, Radhika Apte opened up about the lack of understanding she encountered after sharing her pregnancy news. While fulfilling her professional commitments, she faced insensitivity from a Hindi film producer.
“An Indian producer I was working with wasn’t happy about the news,” Apte revealed. “He responded coldly and even insisted I wear tight-fitting clothes despite my discomfort and bloating.”

She described struggling with cravings and physical changes, noting, “I was in my first trimester and had constant cravings, I was eating a lot, be it rice or pasta and going through the usual physical changes, but instead of understanding, I was met with insensitivity.”
The actress was further distressed when denied access to a doctor while experiencing pain on set, stating, “I wasn’t even allowed to see a doctor when I was in pain and feeling uneasy on set. That truly disheartened me.”
A Supportive Contrast in Hollywood
In contrast, Apte shared a heartwarming experience working on an international project. The Hollywood filmmaker she collaborated with showed remarkable empathy.

“When I mentioned I was eating more than usual and might look like a completely different person by the end of the shoot, he laughed and said, ‘Don’t worry, even if you’re another person by the end of this project, it’s fine. Because you’re pregnant,’” she recalled. This supportive response stood in sharp contrast to her Bollywood experience and underscored the importance of compassion.
Apte emphasized, “I understand there are professional commitments, and I’ve always respected that. But a little empathy goes a long way. I wasn’t expecting special treatment, just kindness and basic humanity after sharing such a personal and joyous piece of news.”
