Pakistan Artillery Shelling Death Toll In India | In the aftermath of India’s precision missile strikes under Operation Sindoor, the Pakistani army has escalated tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), launching unprovoked artillery and mortar shelling for the 14th consecutive day. The cross-border aggression, which intensified overnight on May 7-8, has killed 13 people, including four children and an Indian Army soldier.
According to the Indian Army, Pakistan initiated small arms and heavy artillery fire targeting Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. India responded with proportionate force, maintaining what it called a “measured and restrained posture.”
Indian Soldier Martyred in Poonch, Civilian Death Toll Rises
The Indian soldier who lost his life in the shelling has been identified as Dinesh Kumar Sharma, a native of Palwal, Haryana. He died defending forward positions in the Poonch sector.
The intense exchange of fire follows India’s Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory military operation launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. In that attack, 26 civilians, including a Nepali national, were gunned down in Baisaran Valley, a tourist haven known as “Mini Switzerland.”
On May 7, India conducted 24 precision missile strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These camps belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Operation Sindoor lasted 25 minutes, beginning at 1:05 AM, and killed 70 terrorists while injuring 60 others. India emphasized that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted.

“Our actions have been focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” said the Ministry of Defence. “We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable.”
Pakistan Responds with Deadly Shelling Across LoC
Despite India’s restraint, Pakistan’s retaliatory shelling has been described by military analysts as one of the most intense in years. Mortar rounds and artillery shells rained down on forward villages, triggering panic and destruction.
Civilian casualties include multiple deaths in Kupwara and Uri, with rescue operations ongoing in Baramulla and Akhnoor. Several homes have been destroyed, and emergency medical aid is being rushed to the affected areas.
Rising Tensions Since Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty
The situation has been tense ever since India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty on April 24, just two days after the Pahalgam massacre. Pakistan has since been violating ceasefire norms nightly, escalating hostilities in what New Delhi views as cover fire for infiltration attempts.
As India maintains a strong defensive posture along the LoC, diplomatic pressure is mounting globally for both nations to step back from the brink. However, with Pakistan refusing to de-escalate and India firm on ensuring justice for terror victims, the standoff remains fraught with danger.

The Indian Army, while retaliating to protect civilians and posts, has continued to stress discipline and proportional response.
Public sentiment remains overwhelmingly in support of Operation Sindoor, with the hashtag PahalgamTerrorAttack and the phrase “Justice is served. Jai Hind” trending across social media platforms.
As border regions mourn their dead and brace for further escalations, India’s message remains clear: those who orchestrate terror will not escape justice — and every life lost to cowardice will be avenged with precision.
