The Ministry of Defence issued an official notification on May 13, 2025, confirming the conferment of the honorary rank, which took effect from April 16, 2025. This makes Chopra one of the few Indian athletes to receive such a prestigious military title, following in the footsteps of legends like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar.
From Army Recruit to Olympic Icon
Neeraj Chopra, hailing from Khandra village near Panipat, Haryana, was inducted into the Indian Army in 2016 as a Naib Subedar in the Rajputana Rifles. Over the years, he has climbed the ranks, becoming a Subedar Major in 2024. His journey from soldier to Olympic gold medallist has been inspirational for millions.
