Virat Kohli Retirement | In a surprising move, Virat Kohli took to social media on Monday to announce his retirement from Test cricket, just a week after Rohit Sharma made a similar decision. The announcement has left the cricket world stunned, with both Kohli and Rohit having been integral figures in india’s Test cricket dominance.
Former India captain and member of the ‘10,000 runs club’ in Test cricket, Sunil Gavaskar recently opened up about Kohli’s unexpected retirement. Speaking in an interview, Gavaskar suggested that such decisions often come from deep personal reflection, especially after difficult overseas tours. Referring to India’s recent tour of Australia, he noted that intense five-match Test series, particularly without breaks, can be physically and mentally exhausting for players.
‘When You Start Asking Questions to Yourself’ – Gavaskar’s Take
Speaking on a sports talk show, Gavaskar said that retirement decisions often stem from introspection. Referring to Kohli’s recent performances and the demanding schedule of the Australia Test series, he stated: “When you start asking yourself, ‘Am I still enjoying it?’ or ‘Can I do this for another series?’—that’s when you begin to think about retirement.”
This line is being widely shared, with many interpreting it as a sign of mental and emotional fatigue that cricketers go through.
While Gavaskar respects Kohli’s personal decision, he did express a desire for both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to continue in Test cricket.

#269, Signing Off” – Virat Kohli’s Emotional Test Retirement Post
Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli shocked the cricketing world on Monday by announcing his retirement from Test cricket via a heartfelt social media post. Among the emotional lines in his farewell message, one phrase stood out: “#269, signing off.”
The number #269 refers to Virat Kohli’s Test cap number — meaning he was the 269th player to represent India in Test cricket. This cap number is assigned sequentially by the BCCI to each debutant. Kohli earned it when he made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011.
By including “#269” in his post, Kohli paid tribute to his identity as a Test cricketer for India, proudly acknowledging the beginning of his journey in the purest format of the game.
