Indian javelin star and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra made history at the 2025 Doha Diamond League, achieving a long-awaited and career-defining feat. With an awe-inspiring throw of 90.23 metres on his third attempt, Chopra successfully broke the 90-metre barrier — a milestone that has long been regarded as the gold standard in javelin throwing.
This was not merely a new personal best; it was a moment millions of Indians had anticipated, as Chopra became the first Indian athlete to surpass the 90-metre mark in javelin. This achievement elevated his status and signified a new era for Indian athletics on the global stage. After the event, Chopra expressed, “Throwing 90 metres has always been my dream. Today, that dream has come true — but I know I have more in me.”
Narrow Miss for Gold, But a Giant Leap for Legacy
Despite the historic throw, Chopra finished second in the competition. Germany’s Julian Weber, in exceptional form, threw 91.06 metres, securing the gold medal with his final evening attempt. The thrilling climax kept fans on the edge of their seats until the last round. Nonetheless, the focus remained on Chopra.
His 90.23-metre throw earned the spotlight as the standout moment of the night, earning admiration from fellow athletes and sports enthusiasts worldwide. Even Weber, in a post-match interview, recognised Chopra’s throw as a “world-class effort” and remarked that he was “pushed to do better” by Neeraj’s performance.
A Roar Across India: Social Media Celebrates the Milestone
As soon as Chopra’s record-breaking throw was confirmed, social media erupted. Within minutes, his name began trending across platforms. Thousands of congratulatory posts flooded X, Instagram, and Facebook. Sporting legends, Bollywood celebrities, politicians, and fans from every corner of the country celebrated the achievement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to write, “Neeraj Chopra continues to make India proud! Breaking the 90-metre barrier is not just a sporting achievement. It’s an inspiration for every young Indian athlete.”Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “What a champion! Neeraj has shown once again what dedication and belief can do. The 90m club welcomes its first Indian!”
A Rare Feat in the World of Javelin
Reaching the 90-meter mark in the javelin is a tremendous milestone. This achievement places Chopra among the elite global javelin athletes. Only 24 other competitors have ever accomplished this in professional events. Chopra is now the third Asian, following China’s Zhao Qinggang and Qatar’s Ahmed Bader Magour, to achieve this feat.
With this achievement, Chopra has improved his career-best distance from his previous record of 89.94 metres, set in 2022 at the Stockholm Diamond League. That throw raised hopes that joining the 90-meter club was possible, and now those hopes have materialised.
Focused on the Future: Neeraj’s Journey Continues
Despite such a remarkable achievement, Chopra remains humble and eager for more. In his post-event remarks, he stated, “I’m happy but not satisfied. I want to be more consistent at 90m and go beyond. There are big events ahead, and my best is yet to come.”
With the 2025 World Athletics Championships and 2026 Asian Games approaching, Chopra’s attention turns to staying in peak condition and avoiding injuries. His performance in Doha has not only delivered a powerful message to his rivals but has also rekindled India’s hopes in significant international competitions.
At only 27 years old, Chopra is entering the prime years that many athletes consider their best. If his current performance is any indication, Indian fans can look forward to many more remarkable moments soon.
