West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee has accused the National Investigation Agency (NIA) of working in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
She questioned the timing and manner of the midnight raids conducted by the NIA, raising concerns about the lack of police permission and the aggressive response from locals.
Mamata Banerjee criticized the arrests made just before the elections and alleged that the NIA’s actions were politically motivated to benefit the BJP. She condemned the reported assaults by the NIA personnel on residents in Bhupatinagar and called for solidarity against what she described as the BJP’s “dirty politics.” Banerjee urged the Election Commission to maintain impartiality and not become influenced by the BJP.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made arrests in connection with the 2022 Bhupatinagar bomb blast case in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district.

Two key conspirators, Balai Charan Maity and Manobrata Jana, were apprehended during extensive search operations at multiple locations, including Jana’s residence. However, the NIA team faced resistance during the raids, with one official injured and property damage caused by a hostile mob.
The aggressive response aimed to obstruct the NIA’s efforts to complete arrest formalities at the Bhupatinagar police station. The NIA has filed a complaint regarding the incident.
According to the NIA, Maity and Jana were allegedly involved in a conspiracy to manufacture and detonate crude bombs, leading to the explosion in December 2022 that claimed three lives in Naruabilla village. Initially, the West Bengal Police registered an FIR, but the Explosive Substances Act was not applied until a writ petition urged its inclusion and the case’s transfer to the NIA.
