Iran has formally requested the United States to “step aside” as it prepares to retaliate against a suspected Israeli attack on its consulate in Syria.
In a written message to Washington, Mohammad Jamshidi, the Iranian president’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs, warned the US not to fall into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trap.
Iran urged the US to “step aside so that you don’t get hit.” In response, the US appealed to Iran not to target American assets. The US has not yet commented on the alleged message from Iran.
The CNN reported that the US is on high alert and making preparations for a significant response from Iran, potentially targeting Israeli or American interests in the region.
The NBC also reported concerns within President Joe Biden’s administration that any attack could occur within Israel, specifically targeting military or intelligence installations rather than civilians.
The Biden administration took the unusual step of directly communicating to Iran that it was unaware of the strike in Damascus, indicating an effort to prevent potential attacks on US forces and bases in the Middle East.
While Iran has vowed to deliver a “slap” to Israel, it remains uncertain when or how this will occur, whether through a direct attack or by utilizing proxy groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The recent airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus resulted in the deaths of at least seven Iranians, including two generals. This marked the first time that an Iranian diplomatic building had been targeted by an attack. In response, Israel has heightened its state of alert, cancelling home leave for combat troops, mobilizing reserves, and reinforcing its air defences.
The situation remains tense, with both Iran and Israel closely monitoring developments.
