In a disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through Kolkata, two men were apprehended while attempting to dispose of a businessman’s body concealed in a trolley bag. This incident comes merely two weeks after a similar case in the city, raising concerns about emerging criminal patterns.
Alert Cab Driver Foils Murder Cover-Up
On Tuesday, Kolkata police arrested Krishna Pal Singh and Karan Singh, both in their early 30s, for the alleged murder of their business partner, Bhaguram Dewasi, a businessman based in Burrabazar. The duo’s plan to dispose of Dewasi’s body was thwarted by the vigilance of cab driver Rahul Adhikari. Adhikari became suspicious when the passengers requested a stop on a deserted stretch of the Kalyani Expressway near Sodepur-Ghola and struggled with a bulky trolley bag. Sensing foul play, Adhikari confronted them, leading to an attempted bribe. Instead of acquiescing, he promptly alerted the police by dialing 100 and managed to detain one of the suspects until authorities arrived.

Gruesome Discovery and Financial Motive
Upon arrival, police discovered Dewasi’s body inside the trolley bag, with his throat slit and his face, throat, and hands tightly taped to prevent blood from oozing out. Investigations revealed that the accused and the victim had been business partners in the garment trade, residing together in a rented flat on Muktaram Babu Street for over four years. Preliminary findings suggest that a financial dispute over an outstanding debt of ₹8 lakh led to the murder. The accused allegedly poisoned Dewasi’s coffee, and once he lost consciousness, they strangled him and slit his throat.
Similar Incident Raises Alarm
This incident bears a chilling resemblance to a case just two weeks prior, where a mother-daughter duo was caught attempting to dispose of a relative’s body in a trolley bag at Kumartuli Ghat. In that case, the suspects were apprehended by locals who noticed their suspicious behavior and blood stains on the bag. The body was later identified as that of the younger woman’s aunt-in-law.
Community Vigilance Praised
The role of vigilant citizens has been pivotal in both cases. In the recent incident, cab driver Rahul Adhikari’s prompt action not only led to the arrest of the suspects but also prevented the disposal of the body, aiding the investigation. Similarly, in the earlier case, local residents’ intervention led to the discovery of the crime. These instances underscore the importance of public awareness and prompt reporting in ensuring community safety.
Ongoing Investigations
The Kolkata police are conducting thorough investigations into both cases to uncover the full extent of the crimes and any potential connections. Authorities are also exploring whether these incidents indicate a broader trend or are isolated events. The swift actions of vigilant citizens and law enforcement have been crucial in addressing these heinous crimes. As the investigations proceed, the community remains on high alert, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety.
Earlier this month, the body of a 22-year-old Congress worker, Himani Narwal, was found stuffed inside a suitcase near the Sampla bus stand in Haryana’s Rohtak district. The discovery had come just a day before municipal elections in 33 civic bodies across the state, intensifying political tensions.
