College Street, famously known as Boi Para or “the Book Market,” is Asia’s largest book market and a paradise for students, researchers, and avid readers. With its tarpaulin-covered stalls, the nostalgic smell of old pages, the constant rustling of paper, and pocket-friendly prices, it offers a one-of-a-kind experience that defines Kolkata’s literary culture.
From academic texts to fiction, College Street in Kolkata offers an unparalleled range of subjects and genres. The popular saying, “if a book isn’t available in College Street, it probably doesn’t exist,” reflects the market’s vast collection.
The charm lies not just in the books but in the endless maze of stalls—some makeshift setups balanced on bricks, others historic like Dasgupta & Co. Yet each stall carries its own character and history.
While most shops in College street specialise in specific genres, here are four must visits if you are looking for fictions, children’s books or just motivational reads.
Book Shop Number 37 (A. Mullick Book Stall)
This stall is a haven for fiction lovers. Its shelves are stacked with everything from modern literature like Prajakta Koli’s Too Good to Be True to timeless classics such as Jane Austen’s Emma. Priced between ₹50 and ₹500, the stall offers treasures across art, history, and fiction. Its crime-thriller collection stands out too, featuring works by the “Queen of Thrillers” Agatha Christie as well as contemporary bestsellers by Frieda McFadden.

Book Shop Number 36 (Raj Book Stall)
This book stall has its own dedicated following. Stacks of children’s favourites like Tintin and Chacha Chaudhary sit alongside bestsellers such as Atomic Habits and classics like Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights. With prices starting at just ₹50, the shop bridges generations, attracting both parents and children, while timeless novels continue to remain its biggest draw.

Book Shop Number 34 (Kishan Book Stall)
This stall caters to practical and goal-driven readers. Here, self-help and motivational titles like The Mountain Is You and Buy Yourself the Damn Flowers dominate the shelves. Alongside them, literature and history books add balance, drawing in students and professionals alike. Prices start at ₹100, making it a popular stop for young minds seeking inspiration and knowledge.
Book Shop Number 27 (Piu Book Stall)
This one is perhaps the most energetic of all. Known for its vibrant collection of comics, including the Chainsaw Man, a popular Japanese manga series, and Solo Leveling, the stall bustles with youthful energy. Brightly illustrated covers spill out of cramped racks, contrasting with the faded spines of older volumes. Starting from ₹100, its comics, encyclopaedias and dictionaries keep the stall constantly alive with visitors.

Beyond Books: History, Culture, and Spirit
Alongside these iconic shops, sidewalks display Bengali classics such as Charu Kala and English staples like Little Women. Bargaining remains part of the charm, ensuring that readers leave with the right book at the right price. Beyond books, College Street is also famous for affordable stationery and art supplies, making it an indispensable hub for students.

College Street is more than just a marketplace—it is a cultural landmark. During the independence movement, it hosted nationalist meetings. Later, it became a center for student politics, debates, and discussions on literature, philosophy, and social change. Even today, the annual Kolkata Book Fair draws inspiration from the spirit of College Street.
College Street in the Digital Age
In an era dominated by e-books and digital libraries, College Street continues to thrive. For students, it remains the most affordable source of second-hand textbooks. For researchers, it is an invaluable resource for rare and out-of-print volumes. For tourists, it has evolved into a heritage attraction, offering a glimpse into Kolkata’s literary soul.
College Street is more than a marketplace—it is a living reminder that the love for books, knowledge, and intellectual pursuit never goes out of fashion.
