A 2.5-year-old girl, identified as Aayat, died after a sandbag reportedly fell on her from a staircase at an alleged illegal construction site in the Tangra area of Kolkata, according to local accounts.
The incident occurred at a house on the D C Dey Road in the Dhobiatala Muslim Basti camp locality. The sandbag, which was allegedly placed on the stairs of the construction site, fell and struck the child, leading to her death.
Police personnel from Tangra Police Station reached the spot around four hours after the incident, local political leaders have informed. As of the time of reporting, a First Information Report (FIR) had not yet been filed.
Following the incident, Congress representatives met the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tangra Police Station and the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Pradip Ghosal. According to Kashif Reza, Congress candidate from the Entally Assembly constituency, authorities have assured that a case will be registered against the promoter, identified as Samir, alias Sonu.
Reza stated that several demands have been placed before the authorities, including the immediate arrest of Samir alias Sonu, a halt to all unauthorised construction activities in the area, and compensation for the victim’s family.
