In a shocking turn of events, a 23-year-old man named Afan walked into a police station in a suburb of Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram on Monday and confessed to killing five people, including his mother, grandmother, girlfriend, and 13-year-old brother. His chilling admission sent the police into a frenzy as they began investigating the gruesome crime.
During their probe, the police discovered that Afan had indeed brutally attacked five people, but his mother—a cancer patient—had miraculously survived. She has been admitted to a hospital, where her condition remains critical.
Three Houses, Five Murders
According to officials, Afan carried out the murders across three different homes in Venjaramoodu. His motives, however, remain unclear, as he has been giving conflicting statements. One recurring claim in his confession was that his father, a shop owner in Dubai, had accumulated a debt of Rs 75 lakh, which had put him in severe financial distress.
“Afan keeps saying that his father’s debt burden caused his frustration, and that no one agreed to help him. However, it is not yet clear how his girlfriend was involved in this situation,” a police officer said.
How the Murders Unfolded
Police reports suggest that Afan first attacked his mother and girlfriend at his home using a sharp weapon. He then proceeded to kill his 13-year-old brother with a hammer. Neighbors were left in shock, as they recalled Afan as a well-mannered, soft-spoken individual who adored his younger brother.

A local tea shop owner near Afan’s house expressed disbelief. “He loved his brother and always took care of him. I cannot believe he did it. There is not a single bad thing we can say about him. I even saw his younger brother yesterday afternoon. We had no idea what had happened until the police arrived,” she told reporters.
After the initial killings, Afan moved to his paternal uncle’s house, where he allegedly killed both his uncle and aunt following an argument. He then went to his grandmother’s house and murdered her as well.
Police Investigation and Afan’s Confession
Following his killing spree, Afan walked into the Venjaramoodu police station and surrendered. During his statement, he admitted to attacking his mother, grandmother, and relatives after an argument over his father’s debt.
“He has stated that he felt no one should live after the argument. Afan claimed he sought financial help from his mother, grandmother, and other relatives, but no one was willing to assist him. He has also confessed to stealing his mother’s gold necklace and mentioned that he had planned to die by suicide after committing the murders,” a police official disclosed.
Shocking Impact on the Community
The brutal nature of the killings has left the entire community in shock. The case is being closely monitored as authorities dig deeper into Afan’s motives and psychological state. Further investigations are ongoing, with forensic teams collecting evidence from the crime scenes.
This horrifying crime has added to a string of recent violent incidents in Kerala, raising concerns about mental health awareness and the importance of early intervention in distress cases.
