The small village of Yamagarni in Nipani taluk, Belagavi district in Karnataka, recently witnessed an extraordinary event. A jubilant crowd paraded a black indie dog named Maharaj, draped in garlands, and held a feast in his honour. The celebration marked the miraculous return of Maharaj, who had been lost during a pilgrimage and made his way back home, covering nearly 250 km on his own.

Maharaj the black indie dog, a beloved companion to his owner Kamalesh Kumbhar, had followed Kumbhar on his annual ‘Wari padayatra’ to the pilgrimage town of Pandharpur in South Maharashtra. Kumbhar, a dedicated ‘Warkari,’ visits Pandharpur every year on Ashadha Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, often accompanied by Maharaj, who enjoys listening to bhajans.

In the last week of June, the dog joined Kumbhar and his friends on the pilgrimage, who walked the 250 km journey while chanting bhajans. After visiting the Vithoba temple, Kumbhar noticed Maharaj was missing. Despite searching for him and being told by locals that the dog had left with another group, Kumbhar could not find Maharaj and returned home on July 14, assuming he had lost his companion.

To Kumbhar’s astonishment, Maharaj appeared in front of his house the very next day, looking well-fed and healthy, wagging his tail as if nothing had happened. Overwhelmed with happiness, Kumbhar and the villagers celebrated Maharaj’s incredible return with a feast.

“It is such a miracle that the dog could find its way, although it was 250 km or so away from home. We think it was Lord Panduranga who guided him,” said Kumbhar.

The heartwarming story of Maharaj’s journey and safe return has brought joy and a sense of wonder to the village, highlighting the deep bond between humans and their loyal canine companions.
