Franchises Preparing for Retentions in IPL 2025 Mega Auction

As the October 31 deadline for player retentions approaches, franchises are already strategizing their plans. Reports indicate that teams are assessing their rosters and determining which players to retain ahead of the auction.

For instance, Mumbai Indians are likely to retain Rohit Sharma, who is not only their most capped player but also the leading run-scorer in IPL history. Alongside Sharma, players like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav are expected to be retained in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction as well.

Similarly, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is reportedly set to retain Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, and Abhishek Sharma. The Chennai Super Kings are also eyeing the opportunity to retain their legendary captain MS Dhoni, particularly due to the recently reintroduced rule allowing for uncapped player retentions.

For IPL 2025, the auction purse is set at Rs 120 crore, with the total salary cap increasing to Rs 146 crore. A new match fee of Rs 7.5 lakh per player has been introduced, marking a significant development in IPL history.

Franchises will have the discretion to choose their combination for retentions and Right to Match (RTM), which allows them to retain either Indian or foreign players. The maximum limit for retentions/RTMs is six players, with no more than five capped players (both Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.
