Sources have confirmed that Russia will discharge all Indian nationals currently serving in the Russian army, a decision made following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention during his ongoing two-day visit to Moscow, where he raised concerns with President Vladimir Putin.
During a private dinner hosted by Putin last evening, PM Modi discussed the issue, highlighting reports of Indians being misled into joining the Russian military, with tragic consequences including fatalities among them due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Sources close to the matter disclosed that Russia has agreed to facilitate the safe return of all affected individuals to India.
At the dinner meeting, President Putin also congratulated PM Modi on his recent re-election and acknowledged India’s growing economic influence on the global stage. This visit marks Modi’s first to Russia since the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv began.
The issue gained attention earlier this year when a viral video surfaced showing individuals from Punjab and Haryana, dressed in military uniforms, alleging that they were deceived by agents promising lucrative jobs in Russia but were instead coerced into combat roles in Ukraine.
In response, the Indian government took swift action, pressing Russian authorities for the immediate release of the Indians involved. They have also initiated legal action against the agents and organizations responsible for exploiting and trafficking individuals under false pretenses.

Indian investigative agencies conducted raids and uncovered a network involved in the trafficking of at least 35 Indians to Russia, although it remains unclear how many were forced into military service.
Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Moscow was marked by a reception from Russia’s First Deputy PM Denis Manturov at the airport, signaling continued diplomatic engagement despite the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
