Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently undertaking a two-day official visit to Russia, engaged in informal discussions with President Vladimir Putin at the latter’s official residence in Novo-Ogaryovo, near Moscow.
During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, stressing that no solution can be achieved through military means. He renewed his appeal for dialogue, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving the crisis.
Addressing another pertinent issue, PM Modi raised concerns about Indian nationals reportedly misled into joining the Russian army by deceitful travel agents. Sources close to the meeting disclosed that Russia has committed to ensuring the safe return of all affected individuals to India.
President Putin, in congratulating PM Modi on his recent electoral success, highlighted Modi’s leadership in advancing India’s interests globally. Putin remarked, “The results speak for themselves; India now ranks third globally in terms of economy.” This visit marks the 16th meeting between the two leaders over the past decade, with their last encounter occurring at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in 2022.
PM Modi’s visit to Russia, his first since the onset of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv in 2022, underscores India’s stance on promoting dialogue and peace in international disputes. In recognition of PM Modi’s efforts to strengthen Indo-Russian ties, he was honored in 2019 with Russia’s highest state award, the ‘Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew the First.’
Following the conclusion of his engagements in Russia, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to embark on a historic visit to Austria, marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the nation in 40 years.
