Bollywood actor Govinda, 60, shocked his family when he accidentally shot himself in the leg in October last year. The actor, who is known for his iconic roles in Hindi cinema, was reportedly handling his licensed revolver when the accident occurred. His wife, Sunita Ahuja, has now shared the details of the incident, describing the moments of panic and humor that followed.
In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Sunita recalled her initial reaction when her driver called to inform her about the accident. “My driver called me saying, ‘Sahab ko goli lag gayi’ (Sir has been shot). I said ‘Lagi ya kisine maar di?’ (Did he shoot himself or was he shot by someone?). That’s when he said, ‘Revolver rakh rahe the, gir gaya’ (The revolver fell when he was putting it away),” Sunita explained.
Govinda soon spoke to his wife, detailing the incident. To lighten the mood amid the tense situation, Sunita made a joke about the actor’s mishap.
“I told him, ‘Tumne kahin khud toh nahi maar diya?’ (Did you shoot yourself?). He said, ‘Abhi bhi mazak soojh raha hai’ (You are still joking?). That’s when I told him not to panic and calm down. I feared he might get a heart attack,” Sunita shared. She also called their daughter Tina, who was at home, instructing her to stay calm and take Govinda to the hospital.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Sunita’s humor was evident when she finally reached Mumbai and met Govinda. “Even when I reached, I asked him, ‘Tune khud hi maara hai kya? Laga bhi toh yahan par, jahan par lagna chahiye tha, vahan nahi laga’ (Did you shoot yourself deliberately? It didn’t hit you where it should have?). He said, ‘Khush toh bahut hogi tum’ (You must be really happy). Khush toh tab hoti, jab seene mein lagta’ (I would have been happy if it had hit you in the chest),” she joked.
Govinda, in a previous statement to the media, described the shocking moment of the accident. “Thoda gehra lag gaya tha, laga tab vishwas nahi hua, aisa laga ye kya ho gaya (The wound is quite deep. It was quite shocking). I was leaving for a show in Kolkata at around 4:45-5 am. At that moment, my gun fell and fired. I felt a jolt and saw blood coming out,” he recalled.
Following the accident, Govinda was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) at CritiCare Hospital in Mumbai. Thankfully, he recovered well after medical attention, and his wife Sunita remained calm throughout the ordeal, never allowing the situation to get the better of her.
This bizarre incident has since become a topic of conversation among fans and media alike, with Sunita’s candid and humorous remarks adding a personal touch to the shocking accident.
