Ford Motor is planning a comeback in India, announcing its intent to restart a manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, three years after the company halted operations in the country. The automaker submitted a letter of intent to the state government, two days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin confirmed that talks were underway for Ford to revive its operations in the state.

Ford ceased domestic car production in India in 2021 and ended export activities in 2022, citing difficulties in boosting sales volume in a market dominated by Asian competitors like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. However, the company’s new focus will be on producing vehicles for export to global markets, marking a strategic shift in its India operations.

“The move will see the facility re-purposed to focus on manufacturing for export to global markets,” Ford stated in its official announcement. Specific details about the types of vehicles to be manufactured and timelines are expected to be revealed at a later date.

Prior to its exit from India, Ford operated a major manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, where it produced cars and engines for both domestic and international markets. The plant’s reopening is anticipated to bring significant investment and job opportunities to the region, signaling a potential boost to Tamil Nadu’s economy.

The decision to resume production in India highlights Ford’s intention to leverage the country’s manufacturing capabilities for its global supply chain, even though it remains cautious about the domestic car market.
