In a significant decision, filmmaker Laxman Utekar announced on Monday that his upcoming film Chhaava will not feature a scene showing Sambhaji Maharaj performing the traditional Lezim dance with his wife, Maharani Yesubai. The decision followed Utekar’s meeting with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.
No Lezim Dance in Chhaava: Respecting Sambhaji Maharaj’s Legacy
Sharing the update in an official statement, Utekar emphasized that nothing is more important than preserving the legacy of the celebrated Maratha king, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
“I have met Raj Thackeray. He is an avid reader and a studious person. After taking his suggestions and guidance, I have decided to delete the scenes where Sambhaji Maharaj was shown performing the Lezim dance,” Utekar said.
The Lezim sequence, featuring actors Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, has now been removed from the final cut of the film.
“Lezim dance is part of Maratha culture, but Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy is far bigger than this. If anyone feels hurt by this scene, it’s our responsibility to address the concerns,” Utekar added.
About the Film Chhaava
Chhaava, based on Shivaji Sawant’s acclaimed book of the same name, chronicles the life, valour, and reign of Sambhaji Maharaj after he ascended as Chhatrapati. The film portrays the warrior king as a 20-year-old, focusing on his youth and significant milestones, such as his attack on Burhanpur at a young age.
“When Sambhaji Maharaj launched an attack in Burhanpur, he was just 20 years old. The book Chhava highlights his active participation in events like the Holi festival. While we imagined him as a vibrant young leader, we are committed to respecting historical accuracy and sentiments,” Utekar clarified.
Historical Accuracy at the Forefront
The film has drawn the attention of Maharashtra ministers and historians, prompting Utekar to ensure its historical integrity. A special premiere has been scheduled for January 29, where historians and history enthusiasts will review the film and provide feedback.

“We have organised a special premiere to gain insights from historians. Their guidance is crucial in portraying Sambhaji Maharaj’s life authentically,” Utekar stated.
Chhaava stars Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji Maharaj, Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, along with Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Diana Penty, and Divya Dutta in key roles. The film is set to release on February 14, 2025, as scheduled.
Chhaava: A Tribute to Maratha History
The removal of the Lezim dance scene underscores Utekar’s commitment to respecting Sambhaji Maharaj’s legacy while balancing cinematic storytelling with cultural sensitivity. As anticipation builds for Chhaava’s release, the film aims to highlight the enduring heroism of one of India’s most revered historical figures.
