In a significant move to boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption, Maharashtra has withdrawn its proposal to impose a 6% sales tax on luxury EVs priced above $35,000 (roughly Rs. 30 lakh). The decision comes as India pushes to expand its EV market amid concerns over affordability and infrastructure limitations.
Government’s Justification for the Rollback
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the reversal in the state assembly on Wednesday, stating: “We are disincentivising (EVs in the luxury segment) without any reason … we will not go ahead with this.”
The withdrawal aligns with India’s broader strategy to increase EV penetration, which currently accounts for just 2% of the country’s four million annual car sales. The federal government aims to boost this figure to 30% by 2030.
Impact on the EV Industry
Maharashtra’s decision is expected to benefit global and domestic automakers, particularly as Tesla gears up to enter the Indian market. The American EV giant will compete with homegrown manufacturers like Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors, both of which already produce EVs in Maharashtra.
The state has also been attracting significant investments from leading automakers, including Hyundai Motor and Toyota Motor, for new EV manufacturing facilities.

Maharashtra’s Vision for EV Leadership
With its established automobile industry and dedicated EV manufacturing policy, Maharashtra is positioning itself as India’s electric vehicle hub. The state currently accounts for over 10% of India’s total car and EV sales and offers incentives to manufacturers investing in EV production.
Speaking on Maharashtra’s role in the sector, Fadnavis emphasized: “The new manufacturing facilities will help Maharashtra become the national capital of electric vehicles.”
Future of EV Growth in India
By removing additional taxation on premium EVs, Maharashtra aims to encourage greater adoption across all segments. As infrastructure improves and government incentives continue, India’s EV sector is poised for significant growth, making sustainable mobility more accessible for consumers nationwide.
