Children’s Day is meant to celebrate care, compassion and learning. However, the day turned tragic in Maharashtra when a 12-year-old Class 6 student, Kajal Gond, died after allegedly being subjected to corporal punishment for arriving at school just ten minutes late.
Kajal studied at Shree Hanumant Vidya Mandir High School in Vasai. According to her family, the teacher allegedly forced her to do 100 sit-ups, reportedly while she was still wearing her schoolbag. Soon after, she complained of intense pain in her lower back.
When Kajal returned home, her condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting the family to take her to a hospital in Nalasopara. As her health worsened further, she was moved to Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, where she died during treatment.
Family Alleges Punishment Led to Her Death
Kajal’s family believes the excessive punishment directly caused the severe health complications that ultimately proved fatal. They maintain that the punishment was unnecessarily harsh and that the added weight of her schoolbag intensified her pain.

One of the relatives said, “She came home crying and said the pain was too much. After that, everything kept getting worse.”
The incident has sparked anger among parents and residents in Vasai, who are demanding strict legal action against the teacher and the school administration.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) stated that the school would not be allowed to reopen until a criminal case is registered against those responsible.
