In a poignant farewell address on Wednesday, outgoing US President Joe Biden issued a stern warning about the growing concentration of power among a few wealthy elites in the United States, urging Americans to remain vigilant against threats posed by oligarchs, disinformation, and artificial intelligence under the leadership of his successor, Donald Trump.
Speaking briefly from the Oval Office, Biden highlighted his administration’s efforts to steer the country through the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and bolster international alliances. However, his address quickly shifted to concerns about the future of American democracy under Trump’s influence.
Biden expressed alarm over the increasing concentration of wealth and power among individuals close to Trump, specifically referencing billionaire Elon Musk and other influential figures. He characterized this as the rise of an “oligarchy” in America, warning that such a concentration of power threatens the core values of democracy, individual freedoms, and equality of opportunity. “A dangerous concentration of power” among a select few, he argued, could endanger the nation’s fundamental rights.
In a pointed comparison to former President Dwight Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex in 1961, Biden voiced concerns over the emergence of a “tech industrial complex.” He cautioned that unchecked influence from tech moguls could undermine the country’s democratic institutions.

Biden also addressed the growing issue of misinformation in the digital age, stating that Americans are being “buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation.” He noted that the erosion of press freedoms and the declining quality of media left citizens vulnerable to manipulation. He called for stronger accountability from social media platforms, asserting that falsehoods are now “smothering the truth” for profit and power.
Additionally, Biden warned that powerful forces were attempting to roll back critical environmental protections and reverse progress made on climate change. He also raised alarms about the risks associated with artificial intelligence, describing it as “the most consequential technology of our time,” capable of both significant benefits and profound dangers to the economy, society, and national security.
As Biden’s term comes to a close on January 20, with Trump’s inauguration on the horizon, the President leaves office with a mixed approval rating. However, his final address reflects deep concerns about the challenges facing the nation in the years ahead.
