In a significant endorsement, 23 Nobel Prize-winning economists have expressed strong support for Vice President of economic agenda Kamala Harris’s, describing it as “vastly superior” to the economic policies proposed by former President Donald Trump. This endorsement mirrors a similar appraisal given to President Joe Biden’s economic plan in June, highlighting a growing consensus among esteemed economists regarding the current administration’s economic strategies.
The letter, which spans 228 words and was obtained by CNN, emphasizes that while the signatories hold varying opinions on specific economic policies, they collectively believe Harris’s approach will enhance the nation’s health, investment, sustainability, resilience, employment opportunities, and fairness. The letter articulates a clear contrast with Trump’s economic agenda, which they describe as “counterproductive.”
Notable economists, including recent laureates Simon Johnson and Daron Acemoglu from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have joined this endorsement. The letter, initiated by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, underscores the importance of the rule of law and economic stability, warning that Trump’s policies threaten these critical elements of economic success.
The letter critiques Trump’s tariff and tax policies as inflationary, a point that the former president disputes, asserting that his tariff strategies will produce significant positive effects. “The most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff,” Trump has famously remarked.

Despite this endorsement from leading economists, public opinion appears divided. According to a recent survey by The Financial Times, 45% of Americans express more confidence in Trump for economic development, while only 37% favor Kamala Harris. A CNBC poll echoed this sentiment, revealing that 42% of respondents trust Trump to deliver economic benefits, compared to just 29% who believe Harris can do the same.
Nonetheless, the economists remain optimistic about economic strategies of Kamala Harris. They argue that her policies will foster stronger economic performance characterized by robust, sustainable, and equitable growth. This letter of support not only highlights the contrasting views on economic policy but also signals a pivotal moment in the upcoming electoral landscape.
