Israel has initiated a series of targeted military strikes against Iran, a response to a missile attack on October 1 in which Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israeli territory. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that these operations are aimed at military targets within Iran, emphasizing the need for self-defense against ongoing threats from the Iranian regime.

In an official statement, the IDF articulated that the strikes were a necessary action following months of continued aggression from Iran towards Israel. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari urged the Israeli public to “remain alert and vigilant” in the face of escalating tensions.

The United States was notified of the planned strikes ahead of time; however, no American personnel or assets were involved in the operation. Sean Savett, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, characterized Israel’s actions as a legitimate exercise of self-defense prompted by Iran’s missile assault.

Reports from Iranian state media indicated that residents in Tehran experienced “strong explosions” on Saturday morning, though the cause of these blasts was not immediately clear. The semi-official Tasnim News Agency noted that no aerial activity was detected over the city at that time. Iranian state television later attributed the loud noises to the activation of the country’s air defense systems, framing them as a reaction to the Israeli strikes targeting three locations outside Tehran.

Iranian officials suggested that the sounds could relate to defensive protocols, implying that the air defense systems had been engaged. Along with Tehran, nearby residents in Karaj also reported hearing explosions. While Iranian authorities stated that operations at key sites such as Imam Khomeini International Airport and local oil refineries were proceeding normally, they acknowledged that several military installations near Tehran were struck by Israeli forces.

Additionally, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that air defenses in Syria were activated in response to “hostile targets” near Damascus, though no official connection was made to the Israeli operations in Iran.

In recent weeks, Israel has escalated military actions against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both of which are aligned with Iran, following a significant and deadly assault by Hamas on October 7. This attack is regarded as the most severe in Israel’s history, prompting intensified Israeli operations in Gaza and increased security measures along the northern border with Lebanon.

Israel’s defense minister recently cautioned that any threats to the nation would incur a “heavy price.” Meanwhile, the U.S. has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself while also engaging in diplomatic efforts to avert a wider regional conflict.
