In a recent incident at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), tensions escalated as police intervened to disperse a pro-Palestinian protest camp.
The camp had been targeted by pro-Israeli supporters less than 24 hours prior, prompting a significant police presence on campus.
Reports indicate that hundreds of police officers, equipped with shields and batons, entered the UCLA campus in the early hours of the morning to dismantle the protest camp. They worked to remove barriers and other objects that had been set up by the demonstrators.
The police encountered resistance from some protesters, who fought back and shouted slogans while flashing bright lights at the officers. The situation intensified as police used flash-bang devices to disperse the crowd.
The clashes followed a surprise assault on the tent city by masked counter-demonstrators, leading to a violent confrontation between the two groups. Despite the university declaring the encampment unlawful, the protesters had remained mostly peaceful until the altercation occurred.

The incident drew criticism from some quarters, including a spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom, who condemned the “limited and delayed” law enforcement response as “unacceptable.”
Following the clashes, UCLA announced that the campus would remain closed, except for limited operations, on Thursday and Friday. This decision affected nearly 52,000 students enrolled at the university, including undergraduates and graduate scholars.
The police action at University of California mirrored a similar situation at Columbia University in New York City, where pro-Palestinian activists were arrested for occupying a building and a tent city was removed from the campus.
Overall, the events at University of California highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the challenges faced by universities in managing protests and maintaining campus safety.
