Days after a public spat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump has announced that he is considering large-scale sanctions and tariffs against Russia unless a ceasefire and peace agreement is reached with Ukraine.
The shift in Trump’s stance comes after a wave of overnight Russian strikes on Ukraine, intensifying an already brutal battlefield situation.
Trump’s Warning to Russia and Ukraine
Trump took to his social media platform to make the announcement, stating: “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large-scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED.”
He further urged both sides to negotiate immediately, warning: “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
US, Allies Have Already Imposed 21,000+ Sanctions on Russia
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago, the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, Canada, Australia, and Japan have imposed over 21,000 sanctions targeting Russia’s banking sector, energy exports, defense industry, and oligarchs.

However, Trump’s latest threat signals a new round of economic pressure, potentially including trade tariffs and fresh banking restrictions to force Moscow into negotiations.
Trump’s Earlier Stance on Russia-Ukraine War
After assuming office in January, Trump had previously warned of tariffs and additional sanctions if Russian President Vladimir Putin did not end the war. However, his recent tensions with Zelensky, including reported disagreements over US military aid to Ukraine, had raised questions about his position.

With the war intensifying and Russia launching fresh offensives, Trump’s statement suggests a return to economic pressure tactics as a means to push for a negotiated settlement.
If imposed, Trump’s new sanctions and tariffs could further cripple Russia’s economy, but they may also impact global trade and energy markets. The move could also put pressure on Putin and Zelensky to return to the negotiating table amid rising casualties and destruction.
As geopolitical tensions escalate, the world will watch closely how Russia, Ukraine, and US allies react to Trump’s latest warning.
