US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran, confirming that he sent a letter to Iran’s leadership on Thursday urging them to agree to talks.
Speaking to Fox Business Network in an interview aired Friday, Trump stated: “I said I hope you’re going to negotiate, because it’s going to be a lot better for Iran. I think they want to get that letter. The other alternative is we have to do something, because you can’t let another nuclear weapon.”
The letter is reportedly addressed to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, though the White House has not officially confirmed the recipient.
A Renewed Push for Diplomacy?
This move signals a potential shift in US-Iran relations, which have remained tense since Trump withdrew the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) during his first presidency. The revival of nuclear talks comes amid heightened regional tensions, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and concerns over Iran’s uranium enrichment program.
Tehran has not yet officially responded to Trump’s outreach, but past negotiations between the two countries have often faced hurdles over sanctions relief and nuclear restrictions.
Russia Engages With Iran on Nuclear Program
Meanwhile, Russia has also entered the diplomatic conversation. On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov held discussions with Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali regarding international efforts to resolve the Iran nuclear issue, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Moscow has traditionally been a key ally of Tehran and has opposed US-led sanctions and military pressure on Iran. Russia’s involvement could indicate a multilateral effort to find a diplomatic solution.
Geopolitical Stakes: What Comes Next?
Trump’s letter comes at a crucial time, with US-Iran tensions escalating over sanctions, regional conflicts, and nuclear development. The global community will closely watch how Iran responds to Trump’s invitation and whether the move could pave the way for renewed diplomacy or further escalate tensions.
With Russia now actively engaging with Iran, the situation could take a new direction—either towards fresh negotiations or intensified geopolitical confrontations.
